Privacy policy

Your financial data

Everything you type into Under the Mark — income, expenses, savings, imported statements — is stored in your own browser using local storage. It is never transmitted to us or anyone else. There is no account, no login and no database holding your figures. If you clear your browser data, it is gone, which is why there is a backup export on the Data page.

Bank CSV files are read inside the page itself. The file is never uploaded.

The Chrome extension

The extension stores queued purchases on your device using Chrome's extension storage. It runs only on sites you have explicitly added and granted permission for. It reads page text on those sites to find an order total, and the address of your current tab while the popup is open. It transmits nothing to any server.

This website

Separately from the app, this website uses two third-party services:

• Google Analytics to count visits and see which guides people read. This measures website traffic only. It has no access to anything you enter into the app.
• Google AdSense to show adverts, which is what keeps the app free. Google may use cookies to serve relevant adverts. You can manage this at adssettings.google.com.

Both operate on the marketing pages you are reading now. Neither can see your budget.

Some links to alternative services in our guides may earn a commission. Where that is the case it is stated on the page. Commission never decides what is recommended or in what order — several of the alternatives we suggest most often are free and earn nothing.

Your rights

Data protection law in the EU, the UK and California gives you rights to access, correct, export and delete personal data a company holds about you. In our case those rights are unusually simple to exercise: we hold none of your financial data, so there is nothing for us to hand over or erase.

Your budget lives in your browser. You can export it at any time from the Data page, and delete it completely with the reset button there or by clearing your browser storage. Neither action requires asking us.

For the analytics and advertising cookies this website sets, you can withdraw consent at any time through the cookie banner, your browser settings, or Google's advert settings.

Children

This service is not directed at children under 13, and we do not knowingly collect data from them. As we collect no personal data at all, there is nothing held about any user regardless of age.

Data retention

We retain no personal data, so there is no retention period to state. Analytics data held by Google follows Google's own retention settings. Your budget data stays on your device for as long as you keep it there.

Changes to this policy

If we change what this site or the app does with data, this page is updated and the date at the top changes. Material changes will also be noted on the site itself.
